Portland Japanese Garden Closed due to Covid-19

A Heartbreaking Day at Portland Japanese Garden

Portland Japanese Garden CEO, Steve Bloom announced on March 20th that "This week has been one of the hardest we have faced as an organization. On Wednesday, we closed the Garden to the public and ceased all programs until further notice. And yesterday we made the painful and unprecedented decision to temporarily lay off the majority of our staff, more than 100 of the kindest, smartest, dedicated people with whom I’ve had the privilege of working."

Portland Japanese Garden tried to stay open, but spring weather brought more people to the Garden each day, putting both their staff and visitors at risk.  They will continue to monitor conditions daily and hope to be able to open to the public again soon.

Grand Opening of Cultrual Crossing Village

April 1, 2017

On April 1^st, 2017, Steve & Peggy Garber attended the Grand Opening of the Portland Japanese Garden Cultural Crossing Village to celebrate the success of their $37.5 Million Capital Campaign.  It was a major renovation of the entrance and approach to the garden plus extensive additions of amenities such as a gift shop, a library, meeting & classroom space, both indoor & outdoor performance spaces, garden workshops, offices and capping it off with a large plaza and Japanese Café – none of which altered the original garden.  It was a major accomplishment by a nonprofit garden.  Follow this brief photo tour and see for yourself.

You arrive at the ticket pavilion passing by the cascading ponds of the water garden.

From the Ticket Pavilion, follow the zigzagging path along the terraced rock garden.

Through the Antique Gate and climb the hill among the tall Douglas Firs and native plants.

Walk across the bridge over the dry waterfall.

 

To arrive at the Cultural Crossings Village ...

Designed by the Tokyo-based architect Kengo Kuma.

From the Plaza you can wander through the extensive gift shop.

Then climb the stairs to the second floor …

Where you will find the Vollum Library ...

... Overlooking the Tateuchi Plaza below on one side ...

... And the 15^th Century style Castle Wall on the other.

Wander outside to the patio and Chabana Research Garden ...

Then into the light and airy second floor office space.

Head back downstairs, which doubles as seating for the indoor performance space.

View the Bonsai Garden off the Tateuchi Courtyard …

... Then turn to overlook the traditional strolling pond garden below.

Pass by the Umami Café …

... To enter the garden through its original entrance gate.

As you walk down the hill beside the mounded azaleas toward the strolling garden,
you can see the Cultural Village above.

Walk the Zig Zag bridge beside the iris beds ...

and follow the stream to the Waterfall Pond.

Explore the Natural Garden ...

... And the Flat Garden adjacent to the Exhibit Pavilion.

Then return to the Cultural Plaza ...

... And follow the path back down the hill to exit the garden.
